UNDERGROUND WALKWAY, PAVILION OPEN AT WTC SITE: The 8,000-sq.-ft., glass-enclosed Brookfield Place Pavilion and the World Trade Center (WTC) West Concourse, an underground walkway, were unveiled at the WTC site on October 24 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Six new escalators lead from pavilion to concourse, which enables pedestrians to safely cross West Side Highway. The pavilion and walkway are part of the US$4-million, Santiago Calatrava-designed WTC transportation hub, the escalators of which had to be rebuilt after being destroyed in Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 (ELENET 577).
KONE AWARDED 34-UNIT STADIUM CONTRACT: On October 18, KONE announced it will supply and maintain an additional 34 energy-efficient elevators and escalators to Texas A&M University's Kyle Field Stadium in College Station, Texas. KONE currently maintains 300 units at the stadium. One of the largest stadiums in the U.S., Kyle Field is undergoing renovation that will bring its capacity above 100,000. During phase one, commencing when the current college football season ends, KONE will supply seven escalators and five elevators. During phase two, in 2014-15, KONE will install 14 escalators and eight elevators.
OTIS TO INSTALL 222 ESCALATORS FOR DMRC: Otis (India) Ltd. recently announced its escalator contract for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for 222 escalators. The 520NPE-L-model units are for Phase III of the Delhi Metro project. They are billed as environmentally friendly and capable of handling heavy traffic. A control panel allows for monitoring of actual working conditions, while interfaces allow for remote monitoring and control, providing safer operation.
